Busy schedule for boxers

This was said by Patrick Mukondiwa, the secretary of the board, yesterday.
Mukondiwa said two of the tournaments will be held in Harare and one will be in Plumtree.

“There has been damning silence in the sport for a while. This is no good for the athletes. For them to stay fit and in shape to be in a position to win fights, they should be active all the time,” said Mukondiwa.

He said it was not good to have champions staying  for years without competition.
Mukondiwa said it was important for boxers to fight regularly.

“It’s so sad that our boxers tend to stay far too long without fights and when they eventually get the opportunity to take to the ring, they are rusty hence the bad results,” said the boxing board secretary.

He said there were indications that Kombani Lodge in Plumtree would, on 30 September, play host to the first of the tournaments aimed at reviving the sport.

He said the promoters said they would have a Press conference next week and intend featuring two of the top three heavyweight boxers — champion Thamsanqa Dube, Elvis Victor Moyo or Chamunorwa Gonorenda.

“It is pleasing to note that something will be happening in the southern part of the country. We encourage the spreading of boxing activities around the country,” said Mukondiwa.

When contacted for comment about the Plumtree show, Gift Ndlovu said he was working on something and would soon formalise everything with the board and call a press conference.
He said Arifonso Mosquito Zvenyika and Issa Phiri were also set to promote tournaments in Harare before the end of the year.
