Byo Arts Awards appeals for $8 000

Following in the footsteps of the recently held Harare International Festival of the Arts, the Bulawayo Arts Awards is looking to raise $8 000 from contributions of members of the public that are interested in seeing the spectacle become a success on its debut.

Earlier this year, Hifa launched a crowd funding campaign in a bid to raise R300 000 for the festival that failed to take off last year because of lack of funding. At the end of the festival, organisers announced that the campaign had reached tipping point, meaning that it was a success.

Now the Bulawayo Arts Awards, which have been pencilled in for 30 June at the Large City Hall, have taken a similar route.

a?Weare not sure on how effective it is but the fact that this is the norm worldwide meant that this was a model that we also had to try since we didnat want to be left behind.

a?It is tougher than ever to get funding because the cash crunch has hit everyone and non-governmental organisations and donors that were prepared to support us a few years ago are no longer willing to do so,a? said one of the organisers, Nkululeko Nkala.

He added that the model placed the onus on fans to support projects that they thought were worth their while.

a?Weare placing the responsibility on the fans. Right now the projects that are using the model are not making much headway so we will see how ours goes,a? he said.
