BULAWAYO City FC chairman Jerry Sibanda has been gagged, a first in local football where club chairpersons generally comment on club issues.
Vice-chairman Zenzo Moyo and acting chief executive officer Mackenzie Moyo will instead handle all media queries pertaining to the club, with the former restricted to commenting on disciplinary issues only.
However, Bulawayo City board chairman Siboniso Khumalo told Chronicle Sport yesterday that he was not aware of these developments and said he would seek clarity from Sibanda.
“The club chairman is in charge of the team; we can say he is the ‘owner’. He reports to the board, while the secretariat reports to the club executive led by Jerry,” said Khumalo.
Bulawayo City FC released a statement on Wednesday originating from secretary Horace Ndubiwa saying the move to restrict the number of officials that talk to the media was meant to “enable the club to communicate with all its stakeholders and in particular the media fraternity, in a more organised and clearly defined manner going forward”.
“In this regard, it has been resolved that in order for the media to get maximum cooperation and as accurate and factual information as is possible, the following club personnel be responsible for and are hereby mandated to engage and communicate on club issues,” reads the statement.
Acting chief executive officer Moyo will deal with all administrative matters pertaining to the club, and according to the statement, these will include any financial matters, recruitment and selection, contractual obligations and issues relating to PSL or Zifa.
Chairman of the disciplinary committee Zenzo Moyo will entertain and comment on any disciplinary issues that affect the club and that are being handled by his committee.
Acting head coach Try Ncube will comment on all technical matters, pre and post match interviews, while it has been agreed that players will not give any interviews without the permission of the team manager, according to the statement.
Khumalo said the club will have a substantive chief executive officer before the start of the 2017 season.
“We will soon be advertising for the post. Mackenzie was put there in an acting capacity since he was also a council employee who understands council issues,” said Khumalo.
