BULAWAYO DJs have to up their game if they want to win at the national finals of the Miller Genuine Draft Soundclash because the competition from Harare DJs is stiff, said Gibson Ncube.
Speaking after announcing the results of the Miller Genuine Draft Soundclash in Bulawayo where DJ Kananjo beat DJ Prince at Eden Night Club on Sunday night to book a place in the next round, Ncube said the Bulawayo standards were still low.
“I have to be honest, from what I saw in Harare, Bulawayo DJs should up their game if they are to impress judges at the national finals. There is a lot that has to be done in terms of the technique and style of deejaying,” he said.
Each DJ in the competition was given 10 minutes to mix four genres of music namely, Electronic Dance Music (EDM), Afro House, Hip-Hop and Zim Dancehall. Two more clashes will be held at The Lounge and Horizon Pub and Grill.
Ncube said DJs should build their sets and know when to mix and how long to play the track.
“Take it as if you are driving a car, you do not just start from gear one then go to gear five.
The set should have a starting point and build it into an end point,” he said.
DJ Prince’s down fall was his mix points and flow that relegated him to being second best on the night.
Kananjo acknowledged that he won because of Prince’s mistakes so he has a lot to improve on.
He played tracks such as Partition by Beyonce, Mawayawaya by Shinsoman, Y Tjukutja by Uhuru and Ma 1 BaShupi featuring Peekay.
The Miller Soundclash is a competition for DJs around the world and continental winners have a chance to play at Las Vegas for the Miller Music Tour from August 22 to 26.
In Zimbabwe soundclash competitions are being held in Bulawayo, Harare and on Star FM.
The country’s finals will be held on June 13 and 14 in Harare.
The winner of the Zimbabwe Soundclash will rub shoulders with South African top DJs such as Fresh, Euphonik, Spectacular and Knaves and artistes like Khuli Chana in Harare on June 25.
