The Provincial Directorate for Trade and Industry in Mozambique’s central province of Sofala has sent out an invitation to potential investors from the United Arab Emirates to pour more money in the province, APA reported on Sunday.
The invitation comes after the production of 500,000 tonnes of cement from an initial $14 million capital investment from UAE investors.
The government authorities in Sofala said growth in cement production in the province began in 2013 with the construction of a new mill and bagging plant at Cimentos de Moçambique, in the district of Dondo.
Following that investment totalling $18 million, cement production at the plant rose to 740,000 tonnes per year from an annual 240,000 tonnes with the new mill capacitated to process around 500,000 tonnes.
Another new investment plan headed by Star Cement project is also under way with roll-out plans expected next month to launch the production of 450,000 tonnes of cement per year, following investment of $22,5 million.
In the city of Beira, Swiss investors are spending $17,5 million on setting up the Cementos da Beira plant, which is soon expected to start producing 550,000 tonnes of cement per year.
The town of Inhaminga, in the Cheringoma district, is the site of the China-Mozambique Cement & Mining project estimated to cost $98 million to produce one million tonnes of cement per year.
An abundance of limestone in that part of Mozambique has led to Chinese and US investors becoming interested in building cement plants in the areas of Casa Nova and Muxàºnguè, with investment of up to $59,6 million. — APA.
