EIGHT men and five women have made it into the Bulawayo team for the National Carling Black Label Pool Championships set for the city this weekend. Raylton Recreation Club will play host to the championships having successfully hosted the provincial qualifiers on Saturday and Sunday.
Geshom Nyathi of Kings was the overall winner of the men’s category while Shylet Musonho of Exchange was the women’s champion.
Nyathi walked away with $250 plus a Carling Black Label hamper while Musonho took home $150 plus a hamper for her efforts.
Kings player Nyathi edged Terrance Mhindu 2-0 in the final while Joseph Tamanikwa edged Evans Dube to finish third.
Musonho shrugged off the challenge of 21 women as she collected 14 points in a round robin format tournament with Sithembiso Dube on 14 points. Sithembiso lost on the head to head challenge.
Nomalanga Dusart accumulated 13 points for third with Robyns Gilghower and Lucy Mpofu tied on 12 points.
Bulawayo Pool Association (BPA) publicity secretary Donald Wadawu said he was impressed by the level of competition that was exhibited at the provincial finals.
“The women played good pool and the results reflect great potential and it is the same for men,” said Wadawu.
He said he was positive the team was going to use home advantage just like the Bulawayo 2013 Youth Games team which came first on home soil.
“We were the first sponsors of the Youth Games team which did us proud at home and we want to emulate them,” he said.
Veteran coach Peter Dziko will lead Team Bulawayo in preparation for the Carling Black Label national finals at the weekend.
The provincial finals attracted 241 men and 21 women.
Meanwhile, in Gwanda, Washington Samson was crowned the champion after defeating Mduduzi Sibanda in the final played on Sunday night.
Gwanda finalists have taken the slot for Matabeleland North for the national finals after the vast province could not come up with a qualifying tournament.
