Byo, Mat North to headline soccer tourney

NATIONAL Youth Games soccer gold medallists Bulawayo and Matabeleland North provinces will headline the inaugural Zifa Southern Region select tournament scheduled for Hwange later this month.

The tournament is aimed at giving the region’s young players a platform to showcase their talent and an opportunity to be spotted and snapped up by established clubs. Zifa Southern Region will rope in coaches from Division One clubs to grace the tournament.

Zifa Southern Region chairman Musa Mandaza said the tournament would unearth the region’s raw talent.

“We’re organising a tournament where we’ll show our gratitude to the boys for doing us proud at the just-ended games. We’ll call in coaches from clubs to scout for new talent for their teams,” said Mandaza.

“If possible we’ll choose our regional squad that’ll always be ready for future selection for national teams like the Under-23 side, for example.”

The Bulawayo boys’ team, which was coached by Warriors’ legend Agent Sawu, claimed gold at last month’s Youth Games held in Mutare by beating Matabeleland North 4-1 on penalties after the match had ended 1-1 in regulation time.

The two teams had met in the group stages where Bulawayo narrowly prevailed 1-0.
