EIGHT Bulawayo schools from Khami and Reigate districts will tomorrow compete in the Zimbabwe Rugby Union development initiative sponsored by Old Mutual Inter-Community Cup at Hartsfield Stadium. The competition is meant to help bridge the gap between established and up-and-coming rugby playing schools. Entumbane, Sobukhazi, Nkulumane, Msiteli, Mzilikazi, Sikhulile, St Columba’s and Northlea will battle it out in the boys’ Under-14, 16 and 18s.
Godfrey Koti, the ZRU spokesperson said tomorrow’s tournament is their last development programme of the year having held similar competitions in Harare and Bulawayo since Old Mutual signed a partnership deal with the national rugby mother body.
ZRU signed an annually renewable deal with the integrated financial services group which injected $90,000 into schools rugby this year.
The agreement also covered kit and air fares for the Zimbabwean junior rugby teams which travelled to South Africa for the annual Coca-Cola Craven Week during the schools’ second term.
“We’re happy with Old Mutual’s support and as ZRU we are satisfied with this development programme as it has shaped up. The idea is to have all the schools in Zimbabwe competing in rugby. To create excitement, we will give away prizes to outstanding players,” said Koti.
Deputy Minister of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services Supa Mandiwanzira, Deputy Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Tabetha Kanengoni-Malinga and the Old Mutual Zimbabwe group chief executive officer Jonas Mushosho are expected to grace the tournament.
