BULAWAYO province has started its Heroes’ Day commemoration preparations, with calls for continuous maintenance of the provincial heroes’ acre in Nkulumane. On August 10 the nation will be commemorating Heroes’ Day which is celebrated annually to honour the country’s heroes who sacrificed their lives to bring independence from white colonialists.

The province yesterday held a meeting where committees and sub-committee members were giving feedback to the Provincial Administrator, Khonzani Ncube, on the progress they have made towards the commemorations.

The PA chaired the meeting where concerns were raised that the provincial monument was neglected and only properly managed days before the August commemorations.

“The problem we have is that all committee and sub-committee members are inactive post-commemoration period. We need to continue meeting so that the area can be properly managed and maintained,” said Ncube.

She said there must be continuous maintenance of the heroes’ acre.

“The National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe must play a leading role in the maintenance of the monuments. We don’t have to wait for the commemorations to maintain the area,” she said.

In the meeting participants called on committee and sub-committee members to also be involved on the ground and stop leading from offices.

“For this (maintenance) to be taken seriously, let’s go practise what we’re preaching. Let’s go there and put away our neck ties and put on overalls and worksuits and start working on the ground. Let’s go and cut the grass. It’ll be easy for us to then call other people to come and work after they see us on the ground,” said a participant.

The members endorsed his contribution and pledged to go on the ground tomorrow.

Some of the committee and sub-committee members who attended are leading entertainment, catering, fundraising, disaster management, health, stage and deco and security teams.

Today, they will meet the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs in Bulawayo, Cde Nomthandazo Eunice Moyo and brief her on their preparations and map the way forward.
