BULAWAYO’s City Knights and Angels won the men and women’s Matabeleland North pre-season basketball tournament held in Hwange on Saturday. The competition was played on a round robin format consisting four men’s teams, City Knights and three Hwange clubs Black Dimes, Hwange Heats and Ghetto Magics. The women’s category had Angels and Asward Stars A and B from the coal mining town.
Angels beat the two Asward Stars teams by identical 12-2 score lines. Nozithelo Ncube of Angels was named the most valuable player. Elyeanor Dome claimed the women’s top scorer shield with 11 points.
The most disciplined female player award went to Palmer Mano of Asward Stars. The winner in the men’s category had to be decided in a play-off after Black Dimes and City Knights were tied on points. City Knights beat Hwange Heats 13-11, Ghetto Magics 16-9 and narrowly lost 22-26 to Black Dimes.
Black Dimes lost 9-11 and went on to beat Ghetto Magics 23-5. In the play-off, City Knights edged Black Dimes 15-9. Matabeleland North Basketball president Pendrick Ndlovu said the tournament was a success and indicated that their league would start on September 19.
The Matabeleland North Basketball League will have six men’s teams, Hwange Heats, Black Dimes, Ghetto Magics, Ingagula, Victoria Falls and Mpumalanga, which will incorporate Don Bosco College students.The women’s teams that have indicated their interest in the league are Asward Stars, Victoria Falls Clippers and Black Dimes.
