Byo Theatre to host hip-hop festival

The show is being held as a celebration of the strides made by the genre in the city over the past year. Performances on the day will be a mixture of hip-hop dance and hip-hop music.

In an interview, organiser of the event, Naboth Rimayi, better known as Naboth Rizzla, said the show will be about bringing something different to the local hip-hop scene and presenting ground-breaking entertainment to the people who were not used to such performances.

“The show is all about making a difference to hip-hop followers by giving them entertainment of the highest quality. What we have lined up for them is entertainment that they are not used to getting and it is a first of its kind,” he said.

He said the show would be graced by the winners of the last five editions of the three-month www.da-grapevine.com hip-hop chart as a way of highlighting the strides that the genre had made over the past year. The www.da-grapevine.com chart sees local artistes go head-to-head in a poll voted for by the fans to see who comes out tops after a period of three months.

“We will have the past five winners of the da.grapevine.com’s three-month chart competition. This is a way of ensuring continuity because these are the artistes that have been successful over the past year and we want fans to see them perform,” said Rizzla.

He said that the show will see collaborations between various artistes who will be combining their acts to give a better show for the fans.

“We will have a lot of collaborative performances by the artistes involved in the show. We will have MAC performing with a young up-and-coming artiste called Kidd Ego, while Break Equation will also combine with another dance group for another performance. This is all for the purpose of having a diverse and varied show,” said Rizzla.

Rizzla, who is also an organiser of the weekly da-flow hip-hop sessions that were held at Cape to Cairo up until a month ago, said they would be looking to bring back the sessions which gave a good platform for hip-hop artistes, both new and established.

“We are in search of ways to resuscitate the sessions so that when they come back, they are bigger and better,” he said.

Performers at the show will include POY, MAC, Kwanfire Asaph and dance group Break Equation.
