Cable thief gets 10 years for theft of TelOne cables

Godfrey Kanyenga of Ushehwekunze, Harare was recently sentenced to 10 years imprisonment by Harare Magistrate’s court on charges of contravening the Postal and Telecommunications Act.

According to a statement by the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe, on 8 August 2024 Kanyenga used a TelOne drop wire tied with stones on each end to pull down TelOne drop wires from a TelOne line opposite Melbourne Maternity Hospital Belvedere.

“He was intercepted by a security guard who was patrolling Melbourne Maternity Hospital who alerted one resident who then effected a citizens arrest on the accused person,” reads the statement.

The recovered drop wires weighed two kilogrammes and were valued at US$150.

Kanyenga was found guilty and sentenced to an effective 10 years imprisonment.
