Cable thief injured in the act

A 20-year-old copper cable thief sustained serious burns while he was stealing cables and draining transformer oil in Chegutu on Sunday night.

The suspect Tatenda Chimbarara has since been taken to hospital under police guard as investigations continue. The incident occurred in Pfupajena area in Chegutu and Chimbarara was apprehended by the public who then informed the police.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest. “The suspect was injured whilst draining transformer oil and sustained electrical burns. Investigations are still in progress,” he said.

Recently the Government moved in to clamp vandalism and theft of copper cables. The move was meant to curb the rampant vandalism of copper cables which is prejudicing Government utilities, Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority Holdings, National Railways of Zimbabwe and TelOne billions of dollars annually.
