THE deadline for Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns, Bidvest Wits and Ajax Cape Town to register players for this year’s Caf tournaments has now passed. Sundowns travel to Zimbabwe for the first leg encounter against Chicken Inn in the first leg of the preliminary round on the weekend of February 12-14, with the return leg two weeks later.
According to Caf’s rules and regulations, all teams partaking in the Champions League and Confederation Cup tournaments must register their squads by January 15, as after that no other players can be added until August.
Clubs are allowed to register up to 30 players for the tournament in its entirety. However, if less than 30 are registered by the January 15 deadline, then extras can be added in the second period of registration prior to August 10.
The aforementioned rules mean that any players signed by Chiefs, Sundowns, Wits or Ajax during the remainder of the January transfer window, will only be eligible to play in domestic competitions for their new club.
The Amakhosi and Masandawana will feature in this year’s Caf Champions League after finishing first and second in last season’s Absa Premiership, while the Clever Boys and the Urban Warriors will do battle in the Caf Confederation Cup due to their third place finish and Nedbank Cup win respectively.
Despite the deadline passing on December 15, none of the four South African clubs playing in Caf tournaments this year have announced their squads for the competitions. – Soccer Laduma
