IN a significant boost for African football, Patrice Motsepe, the President of the Confederation of African Football, has unveiled a remarkable increase in prize money for the winners of both the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup.
Effective for the 2025/26 season, the prize for the Champions League winner will rise to US$6 million, marking a substantial 50 percent increase from the previous US$4 million.
Meanwhile, the Confederation Cup will see its winner rewarded with US$4 million, reflecting a dramatic 100 percent increase from its prior amount of US$2 million.
Motsepe’s leadership has been transformative, with the prize money for the Champions League having increased from US$2.5 million to US$6 million since he took office, representing a staggering 140 percent increase.
Similarly, the Confederation Cup has seen its winner’s prize escalate by an impressive 220 percent from US$1.25 million to US$4 million in the same period.
These enhancements will elevate the overall prize money and solidarity payments to African clubs to over US$42 million per season, which is an increase of 114 percent since Motsepe’s election as president of CAF.
This increase comes at a time when the financial landscape of African football is evolving, and it underscores CAF’s commitment to enhancing the competitive nature of its tournaments.
In comparison, the total prize money allocated by CAF in 2021 was only US$18.8 million, highlighting the significant strides made under Motsepe’s stewardship.
