CAF Super League delay

FIVE months after it was first officially announced, CAF president, Patrice Motsepe, has commented on the delay in choosing teams for the CAF Super League.

In July, Motsepe confirmed the elite competition for the continent’s best clubs, which will kick off in August next year with a prize money of $100 million.

The idea had been derived from the European concept, which had been expunged in April 2021 after teams started withdrawing their initial interest.

Now, the billionaire businessman has revealed the delay behind selecting teams that will form part of this competition.

“There have been extensive discussions on the Super League with various constituencies and some prefer to be confidential and we respect that,” Motsepe told journalists at a press conference in Sandton.

“The problem we have is, there are just too many clubs that are anxious (to be part of it). Let me give you an example. (On) day one when you participate in the Super League, you get $2 million just by being a member of the Super League. The $2 million is to allow you to, hopefully buy players as well, because we want it to be the best of the best.

“So that is $2 million to buy players, but also to help with transport because there is a big challenge of travelling,” he said.

From a South African point of view, Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns are the expected candidates that will be selected to form part of the competition, although there has been no official confirmation thereof. AFP.
