a?The basis for your whole foundation is weak, I wonat speak, you try to be like K.Oa? went the first few lines of Wannabe, a?Bulawayo rap veteran POYas diss.
The scathing lines were directed at the cityas brightest hip-hop star Cal_Vin, who he accused of soundingA too similar for comfort to South African rap giant K.O.
Comment on the similarities between the two did not start with POY, with fans and even rap giant Cassper Nyovest observing that the two rappers had a similar style.
Now with the South African king of Skhanda Rap on the cusp of his first solo visit to the City of Kings where his music enjoys a large following, Cal_Vin says that he is not fazed by comparison to the man who is credited for taking hip-hop to the masses by infusing it with unique township characteristics.
The two are set to share the stage for the first time at the Bulawayo Amphitheatre on Saturday night alongside dancehall juggernaut Winky D.
a?I actually look up to the guy. At a time when hip-hop in vernacular was not that popular he actually popularised it and gave me confidence in my own art. I find it interesting but I donat find it disrespectful when people say that I sound like K.O.A I take it as a compliment,a? he said.
He said most people that thought although they were negative sentiments but most of the comparisons were made in a positive light.
a?Most people say that I sound similar to him because Iam good. Others say it because of the similarities in the tones of our voices. Even Cassper said I sound like K.O and I got the impression that he meant in a good way. So Iam actually humbled to meet my icon,a? he said.
Turning to Saturdayas show, the rapper said all eyes would be on him and K.O to see if they could match the energy and zeal of an ever fired up Winky D.
a?He is a force to reckon with. Every time youare on the same stage as him you know you have to bring your A-game.
He makes everyone stretch a bit and bring out the best in their sets,a? he said.
