Call for clampdown on open air churches

accusing them of fuelling satanism and contributing to the heaps of rubbish mushrooming in the city.

Speaking at a residents’ meeting at Entumbane hall, residents said most bushy areas were characterised by different types of cloth, nails and pots left by worshippers.

“We are afraid of these pieces of cloth that are now  all over the city. The city council should descend heavily on these worshippers because that is satanism.

“There are bylaws that prohibit open air worshipping so the city council should not be reluctant to enforce that. To make matters worse, there are no sanitation facilities in these areas of worship,” said one resident.

Residents also complained about poor service delivery rendered by Zesa. They said the service provider was charging high tariffs and they wanted the power utility to explain the pre-paid meter system.

Entumbane councillor, Prince Dube, said it was unfortunate that Zesa representatives were not present at the meeting. He said they were supposed to explain what cash power is all about to residents.

“We note with much concern that most people are not aware of what is cash power. We need more explanations so that everyone understands its benefits,” he said.

At another separate meeting, Nketa residents raised concern over the increasing levels of garbage around the city and the inconsistent collection of refuse.

Chairman of the BCC’s Future Water Supply Committee Clr Gideon Mangena urged residents to help clean the city.

“Let’s keep our city clean and maintain the standards we had back in the days,” he said.

One resident said refuse collection was no longer regular saying at times it was collected once a month instead of twice.

“We need to know collection days so that no refuse is left out,” said a resident.

Residents also accused open air worshippers of dumping rubbish all over.

“Open air worshippers also contribute to littering the city. They should build toilets at their places of worship,” said the resident.
