Call for international visual arts competition submissions

The competition, referred to as the Olympics for the world of visual art, takes place from the 1st of June to the 24th of November this year. It will be hosted by the city of Venice in Italy.

Zimbabwe, through the Ministry of Education, Sport, Art and Culture has been officially invited to participate in the prestigious event, while the National Gallery of Zimbabwe has been asked by the Ministry to implement the project.

This is the second time that Zimbabwe will participate in this international event.

In a statement the National art Gallery of Zimbabwe, which has been asked by the Ministry to implement the project said the event will increase the country’s standing in the visual art world. Besides Zimbabwe, only three other African countries have been invited to take part in the event.

“The pavilion will not only consolidate Zimbabwe’s recognition on an international platform but will also allow a better understanding of Zimbabwe’s contemporary art,” read the statement.

The National Gallery of Zimbabwe’s Chief Curator, Mr Raphael Chikukwa, who will act as the curator, said being invited to the event spoke volumes about the ability of the country to pursue and excel in the arts.

He said it also allowed the image of the country to be greatly enhanced.

“Participation in the Venice Biennale can only take place through the generosity and goodwill of the supporters and partners who continually pledge financial assistance to the National Gallery of Zimbabwe.

“Furthermore, it is a great opportunity for us as a country to show the world that Zimbabwe has arrived and is a great place to come and visit, “ he said.
