Call for promotion of people with disbilities’ rights

Mr Museka was speaking at the official opening of the 21st Session of the Ministerial Governing Body of the African Rehabilitation Institute that started in Harare yesterday.

“It is clear that the ARI has achieved positive results, which has given the institution its current position as an inter-governmental institute,” he said.
“The institute has also remained dedicated to the equalisation of opportunities for persons with disabilities in Africa.”

The ARI session is running under the theme: “Restructuring the ARI towards responding to modern trends of disability”.
It is being attended by delegates from 26 member countries, who are expected to deliberate on the taking over of the organisation by the African Union.

Mr Museka hailed ARI’s promotion and support of the rights of people with disabilities to ensure the achievement of a society for all. He said that technical and organisational shortcomings had made it difficult for the institute to carry out its objectives.

“This resulted in the ARI Ordinary Session held in Namibia last year adopting the stance to restructure the administrative and the finance management system,” said Mr Museka.
“An oversight committee has since been put in place comprising Sudan, Namibia, Zimbabwe and the AU represented by the Commissioner of Social Affairs.”
