Rooftop Promotions is calling Zimbabweans to nominate individuals to sit on the advisory committee for the new Theatre in the Park.
The selected members should have a sound knowledge of the Zimbabwe theatre industry and be familiar with the regional and international theatre houses’ way of doing business.
This very inclusive approach is one of the key fundamentals which Rooftop Promotions, after years of a magical dalliance with the old venue had proposed and singled out as a major driver towards the much needed recovery and growth of a battered sector.
Nominees must be drawn from theatre and performance art venue owners, managers, independent practitioners, universities, arts academy’s, tertiary institutions etc.
The advisory committee will be responsible for passing its recommendations to the resident artistic director and producer in terms of content provision and development.
It is Theatre in the Park’s sincere hope that this transparent approach will add currency in terms of quality productions that will be brought to the venue from around the country as well as make content development sharper and witty.
With a dedicated Ministry of Sports and Culture and various favourable provisions in the new constitution, it has become imperative for the theatre sector to move ahead with a singular purpose of industrializing the sector.
To that end a key aspect of content sought will dwell on ensuring the cultural landscape becomes truly global without missing the Zimbabwean heartbeat.
Purposeful inclusion of the varied Zimbabwean languages as defined in the new constitution will ultimately be an issue that the Advisory Committee will have significant oversight over.
Members of the public who want to see the growth of the industry are called upon to nominate people who should sit on the Advisory Committee from their area bearing in mind the gender aspect.
Daves Guzha, Rooftop Promotions producer said: “The Advisory Committee should also be appreciative and knowledgeable about social entrepreneurship as the model we are employing now must speak through sustainability”.
The principal responsibilities of the advisory committee required to ensure the overall stewardship of Theatre in the Park are as follows:
1. Enhancing transparency in selection of works
2. Making Theatre in the Park and all theatres around the country aware have a one stop shop for that allows us to have an idea of the content available to all of us
3. Frequent meetings of Advisory Committee will ultimately result in more coherent and purpose driven:-
(a) Mobility of works.
(b) Skills needs’ assessment.
