Health and Child Care Deputy Minister Dr Paul Chimedza has challenged Zimbabweans to improve children’s standard of living. Dr Chimedza made the remarks at last week’s UNICEF-funded “activate talk to promote dialogue on innovations”. Zimbabwe is the second African country after Uganda to hold the UNICEF activate talks. “We need to recover our pioneering and innovating spirit,” said Dr Chimedza. “I challenge all our thinkers, engineers, doctors, scientists and technology enthusiasts to rise to the challenge.
“The social problems we face are well-known; lack of access to services, poor quality of services, but it is not always the case that the solutions lie from outside. We need new ways of thinking and new ways of doing things.”
Dr Chimedza said Zimbabwe was a leader in social innovation.
“We were among the first African countries to adopt the Expanded Programme on Immunisation. You will also hear of low cost water and sanitation inventions by Dr Peter Morgan that have not only been adopted by Government, but are in widespread use all over Africa. These innovations have saved and continue to save countless lives,” he said.
