ATHLETES based in Zimbabwe as well as outside the country have been urged to turn out in their numbers for the third edition of the Liquor Hub 10km Fun Run Charity Race to be staged in the city on 3 December.

Stanford Mazura, the Wholesale Centre Liquor Hub and Groceries manager called upon runners to register and participate in what is the last race on the Bulawayo Athletics Board calendar for 2017. The sponsorship for this year’s event stands at $10 000.

Since it is a charity race, groceries worth $5 000 as well as proceeds from the event are donated to organisations looking after the less privileged members of society.

“We encourage people to register and take part in what is the last event of the year. Athletes based outside the country, they should take part as well.

Groceries worth $5 000 plus registration fees are donated to charity organisations, any charity that requires the donations, those in need,’’ he said.

In 2015, Mustard Seed were the beneficiaries while last year Ethandweni Children’s Home in Kezi benefited.

“Last year, we donated to Ethandweni Children’s Home in Kezi and to Mustard Seed in 2015. Donations are done on the day of the fun run, as of now we are looking around to find a suitable organisation that deserves our donation,” Mazura said.

In terms of prizes, they have remained the same as of last year with $500 to go to each best senior man and woman, $300 to be given to those in second place while third placed athletes will be rewarded with $200. Other categories are junior men and women, wheelchair men as well as women.

In what Mazura described as a way of encouraging youngsters to participate in the race, the youngest athlete, boy and girl will pocket $25 each with $15 for second place.

“Prizes remain the same, we are trying to encourage the young boys and girls that sporting activities are good for their health and you can earn a living through sport,’’ Mazura said.

Last year, Tendai Zimuto of Black Rhinos was the first senior man to hit the finish line ahead of Blanket Mine’s Wellington Varevi and Phathisa Ngwabi of Hwange Athletics Club. Patience Murove of the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services won the senior women’s race, followed by Anne Chirisa of Zimbabwe Republic Police and an independent athlete Linet Tomu.

Registration which closes 30 minutes before the race is already underway at Wholesale Centre Liquor which is situated along Hub Fife Street and Fourth Avenue. The registration fees are pegged at $5 for the seniors and $3 for the juniors. — @Mdawini_29
