FOLLOWING a successful campaign against alcohol and substance abuse at Mvurwi High School, the Southern African Alcohol Policy
Alliance in Zimbabwe (SAAPA Zimbabwe) has called for stricter alcohol policies to protect young people.
The campaign, organised by the Mvurwi Town Council and supported by the National Junior Councils Association of Zimbabwe (NJCZ),
featured educational performances and presentations highlighting the dangers of alcohol abuse.
The enthusiastic participation of students and community members underscores the urgent need for policies to prevent underage drinking.
In response to these concerns, SAAPA Zimbabwe is advocating for policy changes among them restricting advertising of alcohol, reducing
alcohol availability and increasing alcohol prices.
Mr Tungamirai Zimonte, coordinator of SAAPA Zimbabwe said these focused policy measures were essential to safeguard the youth from the
risks associated with alcohol consumption.
“By restricting advertising, controlling availability near key youth areas, and making alcohol less economically accessible to minors, we can
significantly lower the rates of underage drinking,” he said.
SAAPA Zimbabwe has also called on policymakers, community leaders, educators, and parents to join them in the critical mission to create a
safer environment for young people.
