A CAMPAIGN meant to limit the number of alcohol outlets in Harare’s residential areas saw a fleet of Land Rover vehicles hooting around the capital to try and spread awareness among the city’s residents.

The campaign is a partnership between the Southern African Alcohol Policy Alliance (SAAPA), the Land Rover Association and the police.

The convoy visited the Harare CBD, Warren Park, Kuwadzana, White House and Lake Chivero.

SAAPA coordinator, Ellen Maparura, said their message was to call for immediate action to reduce the number of alcohol outlets in residential areas.

“We have been calling for ways to limit the number of alcohol outlets in residential areas and enforce zoning laws to keep them away from schools and health facilities.

“We have also been intensifying efforts for police to shut down unlicensed alcohol sellers who contribute to unregulated sales

“This is meant to empower residents to advocate for safer neighbourhoods by raising awareness of the link between alcohol availability and Gender-Based Violence.

“Zvekuti munhu anopara mhosva achipa chikonzero chekuti ndakangandakadhakwa tazviramba saka tabatana nemapurisa kuti vasimbise mashoko awa.

“Reducing alcohol outlets density is not just a public health issue, it is a social justice imperative.

“Women and children deserve to live in communities free from the threat of alcohol-fueled violence.

“By taking bold steps to regulate alcohol availability, we can break the cycle of abuse and build a safer, healthier Zimbabwe,” said Ellen.

Land Rover Association chairperson, Rutendo Sande, said their message was to urge passengers to avoid boarding unlicensed vehicles as well as Mushikashikas.

“As Land Rover Association, we are proud to partner with police in spreading the message of road safety.

“We want people to travel safely on the roads, avoid losing their valuables as well as avoid the rape cases being recorded involving illegal transport operators,” he said.

Harare provincial deputy police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Faith Mapisa, urged motorists to respect sanctity of life by observing road rules and regulations.

“We are urging people to stop domestic violence and enjoy the festive season with their families.

“We are urging people to report any suspected criminal cases within their community.

“We are urging the to report anyone engaging in drug and substance deals and those abusing them.

“We want people to live peacefully, prepare and enjoy their Christmas well.”
