Can Dorcas Moyo be both a sungura and gospel artiste?

Dorcas Moyo has established herself as one of Zimbabwe’s leading female gospel artistes, with a catalogue of more than seven albums that include “Bvisai Marara”, “Bvudzi Rangu Ramera” and “Mhanza Haisekwi”.

A closer analysis of her 2023 release “Mhanza Haisekwi” suggests that Moyo has the ability to blend gospel messages with elements strongly associated with sungura music.

The song Mhanza Haisekwi resonated widely, cutting across both gospel and sungura audiences and sparking energetic dance responses from fans.

The track is credited with influencing dance styles often associated with sungura shows, including the Borrowdale dance and other expressive routines popular in the genre’s performance spaces.

Mhanza Haisekwi has often been compared to classics such as Nicholas Zacharia’s 1994 hit “Mabvi Nemagokora” by the Khiama Boys, a song widely regarded as having bridged gospel themes and sungura instrumentation, and which brought together fans from both musical worlds.

With such cross-genre appeal already evident in her work, the question remains: can Dorcas Moyo push the boundaries further and successfully merge gospel and sungura into a consistent sound?

Both gospel and sungura audiences continue to anticipate whether she will deliver another release that firmly cements her place in both spaces.
