CANCER cases have increased in recent years with 1 500 deaths and 5 000 new cases being recorded annually, the Minister of Health and Child Welfare, Dr Douglas Mombeshora, said recently.

Dr Mombeshora made the remarks during a Moonlight Cancer Fundraising held recently.

He said cancer has remained the most pressing health challenge.

“Cancer remains one of the most pressing global health challenges we face today, accounting for nearly 10 million deaths worldwide annually, affects people from all walks of life, regardless of age, gender, or socioeconomic status.

“Cancer cases have surged alarmingly, nearly doubling in recent years with approximately 5000 new cases and 1 500 deaths being recorded each year.

“This is not to cast a dark shadow on our future or national healthcare system but to underscore the gravity of the challenge we face as a nation.

“It further demonstrates why the Government and the Ministry of Health and Child Care have prioritised cancer interventions to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all ages, in line with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3 and key national strategies such as the National Development Strategy (NDS 1) and the National Health Strategy.

“The most common types of cancer in Zimbabwe are cervical, breast, and prostate cancer.”

He added:

“The Government, in recent years, significantly increased budget allocations to the health sector and taken the lead in reducing the incidence, morbidity, and mortality of cancer.

“However, the fight against cancer requires a multi-sectoral approach with both public and private sector partners pooling resources to complement Government efforts.”

The Moonlight representative group CEO, Dr Chomi Makina, said that they have experienced growth over the years.

“Established in 1995, Moonlight has experienced tremendous growth over the years to emerge as one of the leading funeral assurance service providers in Zimbabwe offering solace, support, and dignity to those who have lost their loved ones.”
