THE Department of Civil Protection yesterday engaged Budiriro 5 residents ahead of the relocation of 28 families, who were affected by floods which pounded western Harare last year December, to the newly-constructed flats in Dzivarasekwa Extension.
The flooding of the Marimba River caused severe damage to infrastructure and homes, leaving a number of families stranded.
A six-year-old girl was swept away and her body was retrieved five kilometres downstream from the family home.
As an intervention, to protect the livelihoods of the residents of the flood prone Budiriro 5 B and the paddocks area of Kuwadzana, relocation of families has begun.
The first 28 families have been given four-bedroom flats on a rent-to-buy basis with the instalment being US$80 per month.
The residents said they were happy to relocate.
“We are grateful because our houses are in a bad state to such an extent that they can fall any time.
“The rent-to-buy deal is fair because we will be using four rooms per family.
“Some people refused to comply but those who complied have no regrets,” said Susan Mlambo Chaputika.
Another resident said that he was a victim of the floods.
“Last time we were affected by those floods and l almost died,” said Victory Tanyanyiwa.
