Bulawayo’s home of jazz music, Cape to Cairo will no longer be officially opened on Saturday as the guest of honour, Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister, Walter Mzembi is unavailable. The pub which recently re-opened to the public after being closed last year for renovations, was meant to be officially opened by Minister Mzembi.

“We’ve had to cancel the official opening and postpone to March 13 as Minister Mzembi has other commitments in Harare this weekend, including the Namas,” Cape to Cairo public relations manager, Engelbert Karombo said.

He said they were in the process of re-engaging Prudence Katomeni-Mbofana and Cool Crooners who were billed to perform at the opening.

“We’re yet to confirm with the artistes if they’ll be available on our new date. We’re also engaging Alexio Kawara to perform at the opening,” he said.

Karombo said they hoped to make Cape to Cairo, Bulawayo’s ultimate hangout pub.

“We’ve received quite a lot of feedback from our clients who say there aren’t many places where they can meet, relax and discuss while they’re chilled and having their drinks so we hope Cape to Cairo will be their ideal place.

“Our aim is to create an environment where we can attract not only locals but tourists so we have cultural exchange programmes and put Bulawayo on the map,” Karombo said.

He revealed plans to introduce a membership system where people will network and share ideas.

“We’ll be introducing a membership system as we’re trying to gather a group of knowledgeable stakeholders. It’ll be great to have young and old people meeting and conversing, giving each other tips at the pub,” he said.

Karombo said food lovers had not been left out as the venue will from next week start serving breakfast.

“As from next week, we’ll be open daily from 7AM for breakfast so breakfast meetings can be held. We’ll be serving full English breakfast with lunch and supper served in buffet or a-la-carte,” he said.

He added that live bands would entertain patrons during weekends with Friends led by Ebba providing entertainment tomorrow. Outfit Band will perform on Saturday followed by Thatha Mojo on Sunday. Patrons will have access to free Wi-Fi. “Depending on patronage, we’ll have live bands performing every weekend and foreign bands on monthends. Once we start having a lot of revellers patronising the place during the week, we’ll introduce live bands during the week,” Karombo said.
