CAPE Town-based DJ Bashmouth, along with D Nice and VJ, will kick off the festive season at BoxPark, Helensvale, with an event dubbed “Old Xool Chill Out”.

The entertainers will take fans down memory lane with old school music, and African cuisine will be served at the event.

Bashmouth, who commands a huge following in Cape Town, said the event is for “grown-up people who are now family people and still want to have fun, but cannot go out like the current youngsters”. The event will be held every Sunday throughout the festive season and will feature different DJs and acoustic bands.

“We are promising an outstanding experience full of memorable moments, something that will bring back good and old memories.

“After realising that times and music have changed, there are lots of grown up people who are now family people and still want to have fun but cannot go out like the current youngsters.

“This type of event suits their situation, as they get entertainment in the afternoon and go home to rest on time,” they said in a statement.

They said the Sunday events will be a precursor of more to come.

“Since this event will be on every Sunday, there will be a rotation of DJs and acoustic bands.”

Old school music was popular at most Harare nightspots like Globe Trotter, Pamuzinda and Adlaide Arces (Kutsuro) from 2007-9.

Several DJs who popularised it either branched into other fields or relocated to the diaspora, giving birth to other genres like Zim dancehall, Zim hip-hop and amapiano.
