ADRIAN SILLA scored a stunner on his debut to power CAPS United to a 1-0 win over ZPC Kariba in a Castle Lager Premiership game at the National Sports Stadium yesterday.
The former Highlanders’ anchor man had come on for Clive Rupiwa after the break.
Silla stormed into the ZPC Kariba box in the 81st minute and feigned a shot with his left foot at the edge of the box, leaving his marker for dead before firing past goalie, Tapiwa Chilenga.
Makepekepe dominated the first 45 minutes, but lacked the cutting edge upfront.
ZPC Kariba came back from the break looking more determined to silence the Green Machine fans.
Tinotenda Chiunye was a menace with his pace and dribbles, giving CAPS United wingback, Innocent Zambezi, a torrid time.
Chiunye was denied by the cross bar in the 61st minute and two minutes later Melvin Mukiwa’s effort also cannoned off the upright.
And on the back of this sustained pressure, Makepekepe introduced fan favourite Joel “Josta” Ngodzo, who teamed up well in the centre of the park with Silla.
CAPS United coach, Lloyd Chitembwe, said he was impressed by the quality of football exhibited by both teams.
“I was very pleased with the type of football played by both teams and also satisfied with how the boys managed to grab all the points. I don’t think we won because of luck, but a good man creates his own luck and that’s why we won. Silla played well and he made good dribbles before scoring that brilliant goal and I’m happy for him,” said Chitembwe.
His ZPC Kariba counterpart Darlington Dodo said he believes his troops can go toe-to-toe with any team in the league, saying they could have won the match with a bit of luck on their side. He also stressed that fatigue would likely weigh heavily on his boys as they are using the National Sports Stadium as their home ground awaiting completion of renovations at Nyamunga Stadium in Kariba.
