CASTLE Lager Premier League champions Caps United Matabeleland North supporters’ Chapter will soon embark on a massive membership drive within the province as they seek to contribute in raising funds to keep players at the Green Machine family motivated.

Speaking after a chapter meeting at Mabhiza Riding Club in Hwange on Saturday, chairperson Gabriel Chikomo said the main aim will be to ensure members are registered and pay monthly contributions.

“We have done our survey and realised that Caps United has a huge following in the province’s seven districts hence we need to embark on a membership drive from early next year so that these numbers are registered and pay monthly contributions to assist in motivating the players.

“We need to play our part. Each district will have their own committee tasked to embark on other fundraising initiatives to raise funds besides the monthly subscriptions,” said Chikomo

Chikomo is also hopeful their efforts will spur the boys to defend the title won after 11 years.

“We thrive on passion and collective efforts as evidenced by providing refreshments to the team whenever they come down to Hwange for league matches. I however feel we can do more for the team so that we retain the title,” said Chikomo, a former Zimbabwe athletics national team sprinting sensation.

Caps supporters’ national secretary Edward Museke applauded the chapter for their zeal and initiatives.

“We are humbled by the chapter’s passion for the team as it is arguably one of the vibrant set ups within the country,” he said.

Museke said supporters had requested that the  league cup be brought down to Hwange town for parading.

He commended the chapter for pooling resources together to hire a bus for the team when it had a breakdown in Lupane sometime this year.
The Mat North chapter also bought a full kit for the team in 2013.

Other members in the Chikomo-led executive are Georgina Ajida (vice chairperson), Wilson Nyandoro (secretary), Willard Nyandoro (organising secretary), Ephias Chimuka (treasurer) Edmore Jena (security and protocol) and committee members Richard Musekiwa and Robert Bondera.

At the meeting members paid tribute to their No 1 fan, Forgiveness Nhengu who attended all the team’s matches this year.
