NEWLY-APPOINTED CAPS United team manager Luis Maio says the Green Machine is ready to reclaim the glory days of the ’80s and ’90s in the domestic Premiership. Maio was drafted into the Makepekepe technical side, which is expected to be led by Taurai Mangwiro.
The Harare-born administrator yesterday said he was charmed by his appointment and has since started his duties ahead of pre-season training which begins next week.
“I am happy to be part of a great institution like CAPS United. We have since begun our plans for the year and at the end of the day the aim is to do well as a club.
“With greater financial stability and structures in place, I think CAPS United will be a force to reckon with. We have the ability to become League and Cup kings.
“But as you know we were rebuilding last season. We should start from where we left off and move forward. Of course, we will be aiming for the league title like any other team. We will see how things will go when we start training next week but I am sure we are moving in the right direction,” he said.
The technical team is battling to keep most of the senior players at the club after their contracts expired in December. Defender George Magariro has since moved to How Mine, while other key players like Tawanda Nyamandwe, David Rediyoni and Tawanda Munyanduri are unsettled.
Rahman Kutsanzira is moving back to his roots at Highlanders, while the future of ‘keeper Tafadzwa Dube, one of their star players last year, remains uncertain.
Maio said they were hoping to tie down all the players and challenged the current class of Makepekepe to invoke the spirit of the Golden Generation of the ‘80s and ‘90s.
CAPS United last won the title in 2005 under Charles Mhlauri and they have been struggling to find their way back to the Promised Land since then.
They had a promising run last year when they finished fifth under the guidance of Mangwiro and his assistants Saul Chaminuka and Brenna Msiska.
The Green Machine are hoping to take another huge step forward despite changes made to their technical team. Msiska is due to be interviewed for his job in a restructuring exercise that was started by club president Twine Phiri.
The CAPS United boss has since dissolved the club’s management, which was led by Joe Makuvire, and asked members of the technical side to re-apply for their jobs to pave way for a fresh start in 2014.
Makepekepe have put in place a new board to run the affairs of the club and the panel has already started conducting the interviews to fill the key areas.
Mangwiro has since gone through the process, while new assistants will also be interviewed to fill the vacancy left by Chaminuka who left for greener pastures at ZPC Kariba.
