THE last time Liberty Chakoroma got a taste of what it feels like to wear the captain’s armband, he won the Chibuku Super Cup with Ngezi Platinum Stars.
That was in 2016.
It remains the only silverware which the miners have won since getting promoted into the top-flight league.
Chakoroma will be leading Manica Diamonds this season, and it will be the second time in his Castle Lager Premiership journey, to play as a skipper.
The Gem Boys are still yet to have a feel of silverware in the top-flight league and, maybe, Chakoroma’s lucky charm might put that to an end this season.
He took over the leading role from Themba Ndlovu who retired last season.
It is a responsibility he admits is a huge honour, as it reinforces coach Jairos Tapera’s trust in the former Chicken Inn man.
It also highlights there is belief in his leadership qualities.
Chakoroma said it’s a feeling he wants to get used to as he continues to learn from Tapera.
The club have brought in a number of players, including former Dynamos forward, Ralph Kawondera.
“I’m 100 percent ready to lead the club and it’s something which will also help me become more responsible on and off the field,” said Chakoroma.
“I feel very lucky, whenever I play with the captain’s armband, I saw it when I was at Ngezi and we even went on to win the Chibuku Super Cup.
“I hope the lucky charm will also follow me here at Manica Diamonds because we really need to win something.
“I’m also praying for an injury-free season, I think last season I didn’t do enough to help the team but I’m hoping for a better campaign.
“We are very confident with the team, which the coach has assembled, and it’s now up to us as players to produce the results.
“We have a good coach who knows how to get the best from his players.
“Our target is to win as many games as possible and to our fans, we are promising a better show this season.”
