THE sight of a confident three-year-old captivating an audience on a catwalk is no longer a rarity, thanks to the Little Mr and Miss Africa Zimbabwe modelling pageant. This unique initiative is redefining perceptions of modelling, which has traditionally been seen as an adult pursuit, by focusing on nurturing the confidence and creativity of children aged three to 16. The pageant aims to mould participants into well-rounded individuals who embrace and celebrate their rich African heritage.

A core tenet of the competition is the robust promotion of African cultures and traditions. Children are actively encouraged to explore and express their cultural identity through traditional attire, music, and dance. By fostering this sense of pride, the pageant strives to cultivate a generation that is “confident, culturally aware, and socially responsible.”

The third annual edition of the pageant recently concluded successfully in Harare, drawing 42 contestants from across Zimbabwe, including representatives from Bulawayo, Chipinge, Gwanda, Kwekwe, and Masvingo.

Founded five years ago by Disan Walulya, the pageant is structured into eight categories, accommodating various age groups from “Toto” (4-6 years) to “Teen” (13-16 years) for both the Little Mister/Miss Africa and Little Top Models/Miss Africa divisions.

Shalom Ramunyenyiwa, the pageant’s national director, expressed immense satisfaction with its expanding national footprint.

“Since its formation, the pageant has grown year by year, with participants now coming from as far as small towns. This has made the event more competitive for those from both cities and smaller communities,” she stated.

Looking ahead, some of the Zimbabwean winners will advance to the continental finals in a yet-to-be-announced host country, while others will represent Zimbabwe at the international Kids Teen Global competition in Malaysia.

Notable representatives for Malaysia include Kaleisha Chiyaka (Mini Miss Global Zimbabwe), Yamikani Marasha (Little Global Zimbabwe), Zvikomborero Melody Mkwanda (Pre-Teen Global Zimbabwe), Anotida Pamuchigere (Mini Mr Global Zimbabwe), and Delroy Bongile Siketa (Little Mr Global Zimbabwe).
