Car crushes boy (3) to death

The harrowing incident, which was confirmed by Masvingo provincial police acting spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nkululeko Nduna, happened on Thursday evening.

The deceased was identified as Honest Chikukwa, of Dendera Street in Rujeko B.

His body was taken to Masvingo General Hospital Mortuary for postmortem.

“Yes I can confirm that such an incident happened, but I do not have full details as yet,” said Asst Insp Nduna.

According to the father, Mr Arnold Machingura, who was with the deceased coming from town when tragedy struck, the boy was hit by a lady driven vehicle, as they were disembarking from a commuter omnibus.

“On the fateful day at about 6 pm, I was coming from town with my son and we alighted near Rujeko B shops. I first helped my son to come out of the kombi and went back into the vehicle to collect a few groceries that I had bought. As I was collecting my groceries I heard people screaming ‘child, child’. Without suspecting anything I went behind the vehicle to see what was happening to my son,” said Mr Machingura.

He said he felt numb and helpless when he saw his child lying helplessly and being dragged by the vehicle.

“I was touched to see my son lying underneath the vehicle, which was being driven by a lady, who also looked perplexed by the incident. There was nothing I could do, but sob while looking at my son’s lifeless body,” he said.

A family spokesperson, Mr Joe Machingura, said they were devastated by the tragedy and every member was finding it hard to come to terms with the painful incident.

The boy will be buried at the family’s rural home in Murinye area.
