A HARARE car dealer will spend the next 10 months in jail for stealing US$8 000 from his girlfriend who he was living with.
Tatenda Duncan Phiri, who’s popularly known as Tatenda Duncan, in the car sale industry, initially appeared in court last Wednesday and pleaded guilty before magistrate Sharon Rakafa.
Phiri also took the keys to a Mercedes Benz and agreement of sale from their apartment in Madokero on January 15.
Phiri handed back the vehicle, but he had already spent the money.
Magistrate Sharon Rakafa stated that Phiri’s “moral blameworthiness was high” as he stole from someone who trusted him.
He was sentenced to 26 months, six of which were suspended on condition that he doesn’t commit a similar offence in the next five years.
Another 10 months were suspended on condition that he pays back the full amount by March 21, leaving him to serve 10 months effective.
