Car imports decrease

Government did not implement the new rule.
Car importers are also shunning coming through Beitbridge, opting to use less busy posts like Plumtree, Chirundu and Kazungula.

Zimra director of legal and corporate affairs, Ms Florence Jambwa, said they witnessed a sharp decline in car imports at Beitbridge since the lifting of the ban.  At least 16 999 vehicles have been imported through Beitbridge Border Post between January and July 31 this year, compared to 24 067 imported during the same period in last year.

“If you take a look at this trend, you will note that people were trying to beat the deadline. In July last year, we recorded 2 888 imports, August 2 950, September 3 535, October 1471, November 998 and 879 in December. We could process over 150 car documents per day during that time and that has reduced to 60. We are handling very few car careers at the Manica bonded warehouse in Beitbridge though we have beefed up staff in our vehicles department in a bid to improve efficiency and offer quality services.”
