Concerns over the Ebola outbreak ravaging some parts of West Africa has forced the Confederation of African Rugby to move their general meeting from Senegal to France next month.
Zimbabwe Rugby Union president John Falkenberg, is one of the delegates expected to attend the CAR meeting which has been moved from the Senegalese capital Dakar.
Falkernberg is set to travel with his vice-president Coleen de Jonge for the indaba from December 12 and 13.
A statement from ZRU yesterday said the decision to move the meeting from Senegal to France came from the International Rugby Union.
“The meeting was moved based on strong recommendations from the International Rugby Board and the French Foreign Affairs Ministry following forecasts of Ebola surge, it was decided to change the venue although Senegal is currently not affected by the disease,” said ZRU.
“As a precaution and so as to avoid any Ebola-related risks, Africa’s governing body (CAR) Executive Committee has chosen to host this meeting in Marcoussis with the permission of the International Rugby Board,” said ZRU.
De Jonge said the 35-member CAR meeting will present a chance Zimbabwe to report on the progress and challenges they have faced.
“We are delighted to be part of this meeting as the ZRU.
“We will also take this opportunity to learn how other associations are managing and it would be great to learn more on general rugby administration.
“I understand the meeting will discuss, among many other issues, the development of the game of rugby on the continent. We will also get a chance as the ZRU to present to the Executive Committee the progress that we have made as a country from junior to senior level in the field of play,” she said. — Sportszone.
