THREE women and a child were left with various injuries after a driver ran over them along Luveve Road in Bulawayo on Monday evening.
The incident, which drew a large crowd of onlookers, reportedly occurred when a vehicle veered off the road and struck the pedestrians who were on the centre kerb. The accident happened near Redan Service Station (formerly Engine Garage) just before the turn-off to Thorngroove suburb.
According to witnesses at the scene, the victims had been crossing the road and were already on the pavement when the car suddenly lost control and rammed into them.
“The women and child had crossed the road and were now on the centre kerb. That is when the car climbed the kerb and ran them over.”

However, the driver, who refused to be identified, gave a different account, claiming the accident was caused by a mechanical fault.
He said his vehicle developed brake failure after passing over a hump, forcing him to rely on the handbrake in an attempt to regain control.
“I tried to control the car using the handbrake after I realised the brakes were no longer responding. That’s when I saw the pedestrians crossing, and unfortunately I hit them before ending up on the pavement,” he said.

Police and ambulance services attended the scene swiftly, and the injured were rushed to hospital. However, by the time of going to print, details regarding the hospital where the victims were taken were still sketchy
