THE Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare has with immediate effect stopped career guidance and counselling activities amid concerns that the curricular is not addressing the skills mismatch between workforce supply and demand.
Speaking during a provincial development meeting in Masvingo on Thursday, provincial labour officer Etias Machekeche said career guidance events for schools have been suspended until his ministry and that of Primary and Secondary Education carry out separate consultations aimed at improving the curriculum.
“There won’t be any activity until further notice. The two ministries have to carry out some consultations before the programme can resume. There are papers which should exchange hands between the two ministries,” said Machekeche.
He said it was felt that the curriculum being used no longer addresses the situation on the ground.
“While I may not give details on areas that need improvement, the general feeling is that we have been using an old system and there is a strong feeling that improvements should be made.
“There are some gaps that need to be addressed,” he said.
Machekeche said after consultations, the two ministries will come up with a report and document to be officially used by parties involved.
He added that career guidance and counselling activities serve to assist students in choosing careers based on their abilities.
