Expectations are high that the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority planned carnival will ignite a citizenry pride with an array of performances including the Miss Carnival scheduled for tonight at the Rainbow Towers, a street parade, street parties and gigs which will culminate in the mother of all shows — the Samba Night.
However, the highlight today will be the Miss Carnival pageant where the queen who is expected to lead in the procession will be chosen from a bevy of 19 models.
Whoever wins the coveted title will cherish the moment as she will get a lifetime opportunity to travel all over the world and represent Zimbabwe internationally.
The stakes are also high with the winner walking away with a whopping US$20 000 and a spanking new Mercedes-Benz C Class. Already the models are familiar with what is at stake having toured some of Zimbabwe’s tourist attractions including the Great Zimbabwe Monument in Masvingo.
Excitement has been at its highest within the camp and the girls are raring to go. The Miss Carnival will see the ZTA bouncing back into pageantry although last year they had called it quits as a result of the mammoth costs involved in running the pageant.
Later, music lovers will be treated to quality Zimbabwean music featuring the talents of Winky D, Cindy Munyavi, Goodchild, Extra Large and Suluman Chimbetu.
If you love Zimbabwean music then this is a gig not to be missed.
Besides the Miss Carnival, fans should also look forward to experiencing street parades similar to the ones held in Seychelles, Mauritius and even Brazil where the bikini-clad samba dancers perform until late at night.
There is also going to be a gospel night where Pastor Charles Charamba and wife Olivia as well as South Africa’s Pastor Benjamin Dube will perform. The world over, carnivals are outdoor events which are held in summer and not winter. It appears the Zimbabwe International Carnival is a unique one especially that people will have to brave the wintry nights should they strip down to their underwear.
