THE ZRP’s Chief Superintendent for Gweru urban Enock Chishiri has banned the carrying of weapons such as axes, machete, knives, swords, catapults and swords.

The directive will be in force for three months and was necessitated by an alarming rate of abuse of the dangerous weapons.

Confirming the new development Midlands Police Spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said: “Acting in terms of section 4 of Maintenance Of Peace And Order Act Chief Supt Chishiri temporarily prohibit the carrying in public (whether openly or by concealment in a public place or public thoroughfare) or public display of any of the following weapons or items capable of use as weapons namely, catapults, machetes, axes, knobkerries, swords, knives or daggers for a period of 3 months that is from 25 July 2024 to 25 October 2024. The prohibition has been necessitated by the alarming and rampant abuse of these weapons thereby threatening the existence of public safety.”

The prohibition empowers any police officer to arrest the accused person and seize the weapon.

Chishiri said any person who would violate the prohibition would be fined or face a custodial sentence

“Anyone who would be found in possession of any of the weapons would be fined or face a six month jail sentence,” said Chief Supt Chishiri.
