Cassper Nyovest ‘paid peanuts’ for smash hit

CASSPER Nyovest is greedy! That’s the allegation made by his friends.

They claim “Cassper Nyovest”, real name Refiloe Phoolo, made a pile of money from the hit song Doc Shebeleza – but he paid a miserable R1,500 to the 18-year-old composer, Fairness Twala from Tzaneen, in Limpopo, South Africa.

A music industry source, who asked not to be named, said: “Fairness is young and naive – that’s why he charged Cassper so little.

“When the song went big, Cassper could have paid him more as a token of appreciation – but he didn’t.”

The source added that Fairness’ parents were helping him get paid what’s due to him from the use of the song on TV adverts, soundtracks and other commercial platforms.

The insider said: “This industry isn’t for the faint-hearted. Fairness doesn’t mind that he got paid a pittance for the beat.

“He’s grateful that it launched his musical career. But it’s sad that he was paid a mere R1,500,” said the informant.

Fairness previously told Sunday Sun that his focus this year is on his matric studies. He acknowledged that all the attention he had been getting was overwhelming.

But Fairness credited the love and support of his family and friends as his source of strength.

Cassper released his award-winning debut album, Tsholofelo, last year. It includes the hit single Doc Shebeleza.

Recently, he walked away with five awards at the Metro FM Music Awards. Cassper is known for speaking his mind, and that has gained him a few enemies.

On Saturday, Fairness said: “We all have to start somewhere. I’m fine with my business deal with Cassper. People should mind their own business.”

In his defence Cassper said: “I’m the one who discovered this boy. I was with him in Polokwane. He never complained about money to me.”

Asked how much he paid Fairness for the hit song Doc Shebeleza, he said: “I won’t disclose the amount in public.”- DailySun.
