‘Catch ‘em young’ is ZUJ’s motto

The main purpose of the workshop was to encourage child participation in the main- stream media, both print and electronic. Journalists that have a direct contact with children in the media and the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists took turns to teach and encourage the participants to take an active role in contributing to the news that is published in papers, radio and television.

Charles Mushinga, the editor of the Sunday Mail Bridge, took time to shed light on Bridge stating that the paper is evidence of opportunity that is available for children from all walks of life to showcase their journalistic prowess.

“It is your right to be actively involved in the making of news because the information you have is invaluable and the Bridge among other platforms is the right place to air what you have,” said Charles.

ZUJ secretary-general Foster Dongozi, who was part of the facilitation team, also took to the stage and encouraged the children to be sources of news.
He pointed out to this fact in particular relation to the issues that affect children.

“There is no one who has a better view of the issues that affect children than the children themselves, therefore take an active role in making known the pertinent issues that affect you through media platforms like the newspaper, for example, because that is the real deal,” said Dongozi.

The participants from the ZBC’s YGT, Saturday Herald’s Cool Lifestyle, St Giles, Chipawo, the Junior Parliament among many others were all delighted in having been sensitised in these issues and vowed to be vigorous in encouraging their peers to be involved in the making of news and also increasing the consumption of news among the children, after all news is information hence empowerment. – CL Reporter.
