Government to restructure teacher training colleges

TEACHER training colleges in the country will be restructured and their curriculum adjusted to meet the requirements of special needs education, an official said yesterday.
The new system would enable those living with disabilities to train as teachers and also allow pupils living with disabilities to learn in one class with their able-bodied counterparts.
In his speech during the official opening of a five-day national workshop on special needs education (SNE) at the United College of Education in Bulawayo, the director of Manpower and Institutional Development in the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Mr Johnsai Tandi Dewa, said the Government had passed a resolution to mainstream SNE at all levels of teacher training and in schools.
“The Government sees the development of inclusive colleges and schools as the most effective means of achieving education for all. Inclusivity therefore, should be accorded a privileged place on the agenda for the development of education,” said Mr Dewa who was the guest of honour.
“Existing infrastructure in colleges should be adjusted and modified to accommodate all students’ needs. The college and the lecturer should realign their budgets, infrastructure, teaching and learning methodologies and curriculum to meet all students’ needs.
