Cattle branding target surpassed

ZIMBABWE has set a new record in cattle branding after having carried out the programme on more than 2,5 million cattle countrywide, surpassing the initial target of 1,5 million.

Cattle branding is a process where farmers get a distinct mark for their cattle for a particular dip-tank, area of origin and district for easy identification.

Under the Animal Health Act, cattle branding is mandatory. Farmers are allowed to have personalised cattle branding, on condition it is registered with the Registrar-General’s Office.

For decades, cattle branding has been a challenge, with farmers failing to heed the Government’s calls.

However, with the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) having made available tools of the trade on dip tanks countrywide, the process has been made easier.

According to DVS, the process was launched soon after the 2020-2021 summer cropping season, in June, targeting all newly born and purchased cattle.

In an interview with The Sunday Mail, DVS chief director Dr Josphat Nyika said cattle branding is a prerequisite in livestock production for reduction of diseases and theft.

“To date, 2 526 000 cattle have been branded. Initially, we had targeted 1,5 million cattle, but with the support we have from the ministry, we managed to surpass the target.”
