Cattle breeding set to benefit 3 000 families

Masvingo Bureau
Zimbabwe’s sole lithium miner, Bikita Minerals, has embarked on a pilot cattle breeding programme expected to initially benefit more than 3 000 rural families in Gutu and Bikita districts.
The programme could grow to cover the whole of Masvingo Province.
Bikita Minerals director Cde Dzikamai Mavhaire on Wednesday said this was part of the company’s community responsibility programme.
“The thrust is to improve the quality of cattle as a way of empowering our people and this also part of Bikita Minerals community responsibility programme,” he said.
He said the response from cattle farmers was overwhelming and hybrid bulls had already been distributed to selected ranchers.
The initiative follows a similar one by low veld sugarcane giants Triangle and Hippo Valley, which last year donated 33 hybrid bulls to all the chiefs in Masvingo to improve breeding in the Province.
