TWO men lost nearly US$13 000 and $45 000 cash to an armed robber who had claimed that he was selling 36 cattle in Mwenezi.
The incident happened last Thursday.
The armed robber produced a pistol after he was offered accommodation by the two victims at their house in Mwenezi.
Investigations revealed that the armed robber phoned the victims alleging that he was in Kwekwe and had intentions to sleep over at their house before proceeding to the Maranda area in Mwenezi where he said the cattle were.
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident.
“The ZRP urges members of the public against trusting strangers. This follows an armed robbery case which occurred on September 30, 2021 in Mwenezi, where two men, aged 52 and 68, were robbed of cash amounting to US$12 920, $45 000 and cellphones.
“One of the complainants, who is a cattle buyer, received a call from an unknown caller purporting to be selling 36 cattle. The suspect told the complainant that he was in Kwekwe and intended to sleep over at the complainant’s house before proceeding to Maranda area (in Mwenezi) where he claimed his cattle were.
“The suspect was offered accommodation before producing an unidentified pistol and demanded cash from the complainants,” he said.
Investigations are still in progress.
In a related incident, police in Epworth arrested Aleck Kapito (48) in connection with a robbery case which occurred last Tuesday at Marase Estates, Ruwa.
The suspect and his three accomplices who are still at large, posed as police officers before robbing the victim of two laptops, two iPads, two cellphones and US$7 000 cash.
Police in Harare are investigating a robbery case which occurred at the 10km peg along the Chinhoyi-Karoi highway on September 28.
Three unidentified suspects attacked a 30-year-old man before they stole US$1 850 cash and a cellphone.
The robbers were travelling in a white Toyota Hilux D4D twin cab and had offered a lift to the victim who was going to Karoi.
Police have also launched a manhunt for armed robbers who committed robberies between September 26 and 28, in Harare, Masvingo, Bulawayo and Beitbridge.
In one of the cases, eight armed robbers attacked two security guards at Agricorn Equipment along Coventry Road before tying their hands and legs with shoe laces before stealing US$43 000 cash from the finance director’s office after they broke the locking system of the cash safe using two angle grinders they took from the workshop.
In a related case, police in Masvingo are investigating a case of armed robbery which occurred on September 27 at Chigwanga Supermarket and Mai Tina General Dealer Shop at Neshuro Growth Point in Mwenezi.
Two armed robbers pounced on employees of the supermarket and stole a cellphone, US$400 and R20 000 from the till points.
One of the robbers also shot a security guard who was manning the supermarket and seriously injured him on the hand and abdomen.
