MARC Cayuex might be on the verge of returning to competitive professional golf after he took part in the IGT Race Tour to Q-School presented by Pro Squad Academy at the Centurion Country Club in South Africa, which ended on Tuesday. Cayuex made a name for himself both in the Sunshine Tour and the European Tour before he was involved in a near fatal car crash which claimed the life of a police officer.
The nine-time Sunshine Tour winner opened the first round with a 76 before returning with a two-under-72 to finish two over to make the cut in his first competitive outing since a devastating car crash cut short his promising career in 2010.
It was, however, the third and final round that let the Zimbabwean down as he finished on one-over-73 for an overall total three-over-par 279.
The former Chapman golfer was hoping to hunt down a first trophy in many years with the Sunshine Tour’s Qualifying School looming next week.
Cayeux played a solid opening round, but dropped four shots around the turn in round one.
He offset three bogeys with five birdies to finish in a tie for 33 on three-over.
“It was an overwhelming first day, but it filled me with joy to see that the last five years haven’t gone to waste,” the Zimbabwean said.
“It’s a lot of fun to have Jana (wife) caddie for me for the first time in 13 years and it was really nice to dip into red figures today,” he told IGT after the second round.
Cayeux was not the only Zimbabwean in the field as he was joined by Sheldon Steyn who went on to finish a stroke behind on four-over.
Steyn had rounds of 73, 71 and 76 for a total 220.
